The Wall Project

This was the first project that I felt I had full creative control and the knowledge to makes something special.

I had been playing a lot of Tears of the Kingdom and I really wanted to channel the energy of the numerous puzzles found in the game. I decided to focus on one in particular, where you use Link’s Ultrahand ability to orient a shape to match another shape. I found it to be an entrancing, yet simple puzzle.

To make it my own, I decided to thematically make the puzzle unlock doors to progress the level, and place the shapes inside these cubes to give it an “ancient puzzle” kind of feel. Additionally, I decided to record my own stone grinding sounds, with the help of my youngest kiddo, to give some extra feel to the stones moving in the puzzle and with the doors.

For the setting, I had been really into learning about Chinese culture and could think of no better place than the Great Wall to house my level. It turned out to be a great way to hide my rooms and think about how to naturally weave the stage through the main chamber. It impacted my aesthetics significantly and influenced the design of my puzzle boxes.

As a final note, we weren’t required to name this project, but I named it The Wall as a fitting title. I felt real progress in my ability to capture an idea and work efficiently through iterative design. It felt like I had climbed over the wall and found my footing towards progress.
