Corporate Monster
You take the role as the Boss in this story driven drama. Your task: fire one employee in the next 15 minutes, or it's you on the chopping block. Each character has dedicated their time and effort into the company, so the choice will not be easy.
My first Game Jam (which I kept spelling as Gam Jam, for some reason)
Needless to say, I was nervous. The theme was “You are the monster”, and I knew instantly I wanted to do a twist on this. I didn’t have anyone to team up with, so my first adventure into a game jam was pretty daunting. I went through the normal stages of grief throughout (like I am sure everyone does) but I really started to breakthrough and believe in myself about halfway through. I cannot wait to participate in another. This experience taught me to believe in my skills and vision to produce something unique. Click the button below to play the game on Itch.io!
Building a monster
I had a few ideas that stuck out early on, but I decided to focus on the very real tragedy that is corporate America. This is a very real scenario to me (though it’s souped up for the game a bit) and is a fun take on the theme. It was challenging to be so cold towards the employees that were obviously all very valuable. Anyone that knows me knows that I am a very kind person that focuses on people and lifting up others to be their best selves. I speak my mind when I feel I need to, but I try to encourage vs discourage as I find it more helpful to support people than to grind them down. Creating this monster was a stretch of my character as I would never handle the situation the game puts you in this way. I hoped to convey that everyone felt like the wrong choice, but you must decide on someone to keep your job in the game.
My first solo game
Prior to CM, I had only complete one small game with a team of 5. It was technically a full mini game (click here to check it out), but it didn’t feel much more than a boss fight. CM was my chance to craft a bite-sized experience that felt like it had a message to send. From a pure workload perspective, I had to do everything myself, which was super challenging, but incredibly rewarding. Voiceover, writing, animations, scripting, level design all fell on my shoulders and the challenge was incredible. It’s not perfect, but I think it turned out exactly how I wanted it to be in presentation.
This was my first time doing contextual UI elements, dialogue, a notification system, and a working clock. I really got to lean into HUD elements in this project with animations an pop ups.
